BENEFITS OF MPEG 4 DIGITAL VIDEO COMPRESSION NOW AVAILABLE TO WINCAN V7 USERS.
On course to replace MPEG 2 compression in the broadcast industry, the new MPEG 4 compression algorithm offers several new features that will also benefit video inspection professionals---features available today in Version 7 of WinCan video inspection software from WinCan America.
Benchmarks show the efficiency for MPEG 4 to be considerably higher than that of MPEG 2, which means it can perform encoding/decoding more quickly, and generates files that occupy less storage/bandwidth at a given profile. (A profile is combination of resolution, compression settings, frame rate and other variables that determine the attributes of the compressed clip.) WinCan V7 performs hardware PCI encoding, allowing real-time video capture using a true MPEG 4 profile within an AVI container.
Depending on the profile used, MPEG 4 also lets a video professional browse and jog through archived video with greater speed and improved rendering performance. In the context of WinCan V7, this makes it easier to search footage, and increases the speed at which video can be meaningfully reviewed. With the new jog/shuttle module available in WinCan V7, a professional can also view real-time rendering of video files for additional capture and editing.
Where bandwidth is a concern---for example the real-time streaming of footage from a remote location---MPEG 4 adaptively throttles video quality to the maximum supported by the host channel. This is done without re-ripping the video file, so broadcast can be done deterministically, and without monopolizing undue resources on the host computer.
In addition to MPEG 4, WinCan V7 supports the industry-standard AVI, MPEG and MPEG 2 formats. To learn more about WinCan V7 software, click here.
